Ocean County Art Competition Looking For Creative Seniors

TOMS RIVER - Ocean County seniors who are at least 60 years old are invited to submit their creative works for competition in the 31st Annual Senior Citizens Art Exhibit recognizing 11 different artistic areas, according to Freeholder Joseph H. Vicari, who serves as chairman of Senior Services.

"I have seen many creative works by our seniors as I have visited the various communities and organizations around the county. They deserve to be considered in this event," said Vicari. "We have many artistic individuals in the county. This is an opportunity for their creative ability to be recognized."

The event is co-sponsored by the Senior Art Advisory Committee of Ocean County College, chaired by Lewis Jacobs and the Academy for Lifelong Learning.

"Ribbon awards will be presented to those who receive a first, second, third and an honorable mention in each category," said Jacobs. "All of the first place winners will represent the county in the state competition, and will be eligible to show their works at the First Annual Senior Festival of the Arts at the Strand Theatre June 27 to 29."

Showcasing the artistic talent of seniors has become a proud tradition in the county, said D. Jane Maloney, director of the Office of Senior Services.

"Last year, we were proud that six of our Ocean County residents went on to win recognition at the state level," said Maloney. "They were Michael Cohen and Lois Linde, both of Lakewood who won first place awards in digital imagery and pastels respectively; Lou Riccio of Pt. Pleasant, second place in drawing; and Elsa Herman, Brick, watercolor, Patrician Shepherd, Little Egg Harbor, mixed media and Dimas Zenkewich, Manchester, oil, all received honorable mentions."

The winners also will be recognized May 15, according to Robert Krantz, director of the Fine Arts Center.

"A reception in their honor will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, with the awards being presented at 11 a.m. at the Ocean County College Fine Arts Gallery in Toms River," said Krantz. "We will have the award winning works on display from May 4 to May 24 from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m., Monday to Thursday, until 4 p.m. on Fridays and until 1 p.m. on Saturdays."

Awards will be made in both professional and non-professional in 11 categories for: acrylic, crafts (original creations, no kits or molds), digital imagery, drawing (pencil, pen, ink, graphite), mixed media, oil, pastel, photography, print, sculpture and watercolor.

A $10 nonrefundable entry fee is required with the submission that must be delivered by May 2 to the First Art Gallery at Ocean County College.

Full details including rules for submission are available from the county senior offices by calling 732-255-0400 ext. 2380, and also are available at the County Connection in the Ocean County Mall.
