Fight Against Breast Cancer Coming To Governor's Mansion By Keith Hagarty
Area residents are encouraged to fight the war against breast cancer and honor someone who lived the struggle as the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Central and South Jersey affiliate will host the fifth Annual Spirit of Jane Rodney Reception at Drumthwacket on May 17.
The reception is named after Jane Rodney, who was instrumental in bringing the Race for the Cure to New Jersey. The Spirit of Jane Rodney Reception is an elegant evening at the Governor's mansion, with guests enjoying an evening of delicious food, lively entertainment and an exceptional silent auction, according to organizers.
Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to accelerate cures. Events like the annual Komen Race for the Cure have allowed the non-profit group to invest nearly $1 billion toward their cause, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
This year, the organization will honor Meredith Peterson, a dedicated fundraiser and volunteer of the affiliate before her passing in October 2006 at the age of 36.
"While Meredith lived a relatively short life, and has been honored by many in the Princeton Community, we felt her efforts with Susan G. Komen NJ Race for the Cure could not go unnoticed," said Mindy Kirstein, chair of this year's reception.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure Central and South Jersey affiliate work to affect a meaningful reduction in the percentage of late stage diagnoses of breast cancer through aggressive education and screening initiatives. The affiliate serves 13 New Jersey counties from Somerset to Cape May and everywhere in between. Last year, the affiliate invested nearly $1 million into community education and screening programs.
The committee is seeking corporate sponsors and advertisers. Kirstein said the event will be a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate community support while enjoying a fabulous evening.
