Household Hazardous Waste Collections Start May 1
TOMS RIVER - Ocean County's spring household hazardous waste disposal program is scheduled to get underway on May 1 with Brick Township being the first of five municipalities to host drop-off sites.
"During the 2006 collection, our residents got rid of more than 375,000 pounds of hazardous waste," said Freeholder James F. Lacey, who serves as liaison to the county's recycling program. "We encourage our residents to take advantage of this free program which we conduct twice a year."
The materials will be accepted a five municipal sites throughout the county. Residents can dispose of materials at any site but need to register.
Materials accepted at the household hazardous waste collection sites are paints, thinners, boat paints, solvents, pool chemicals, pesticides and herbicides, aerosol cans, auto products, toilet and drain cleaners, silver polishes, oven cleaners, photographic chemicals, rug and upholstery cleaners, polishes and bleaches, waste oil and used gasoline.
Clean Venture will handle the spring collection and disposal of household hazardous waste collections.
"The thermometer exchange program was established to help get mercury out of the waste stream and to raise awareness that mercury is the problem," Lacey said. "We have handed out several thousand digital thermometers since we started this part of the program a few years ago."
