MAN KILLED IN MANASQUAN RIVER BARGE ACCIDENT
BRICK - James P. Lovely, a worker for George Harms Construction Co., was killed April 18 when his barge flipped over beneath the Route 70 bridge spanning Brick Township and Brielle. Rescue workers struggled for hours on the Manasquan River, but debris and an oil spill stood in the way of dive team rescue efforts. Those rescue efforts quickly became recovery efforts. Lovely, 37, and Chris Ramano, 32, of Brick, were operating a barge and push-boat as part of efforts to dismantle the drawbridge when the barge flipped over. Ramano managed to escape; Lovely may have been struck by debris as the barge flipped, rescue workers theorized, and drowned in the 10-12-foot deep water.
