Eighth Annual 5K Raises $20,000 For Dottie's House

There were approximately 200 participants ranging from competitive runners to weekend walkers.
POINT PLEASANT BEACH - On October 13, the Eighth Annual Friends of Dottie's House Family Fun 5K Run/ Walk raised almost $20,000 for the survivors of domestic violence and their children who reside at Dottie's House.

"We are so pleased at the wonderful turnout today, and the support and encouragement we're receiving for our organization," said Regina Foley, president of Friends of Dottie's House. "The weather cooperated, and all our participants, sponsors and volunteers are having a fabulous morning."

Dottie's House, a 17-unit apartment facility, provides housing along with a training program designed to develop emotional and financial independence for women who were victims of domestic violence. Life skills include job training, financial and legal counseling and nutrition and parenting classes. Other services include transportation to and from work and daycare facilities, as well as a domestic violence support group. Residents can stay at the non-profit facility for up to two years. Dottie's House is located in a secure, undisclosed location in Ocean County.

"Our goal is to have residents become selfsufficient and break the generational cycle of violence," said Deb Galletta, program director, who acted as the event's emcee.

The 5K event is held annually in Point Pleasant Beach, beginning and ending at the borough's band shell, which is adjacent to the Little Silver Parking Lot at Arnold and Ocean avenues. The registration fee was $20 for adults and $10 for children, and included custom designed t-shirts, lunch and musical entertainment. There were approximately 200 participants ranging from competitive runners to weekend walkers. Various groups also participated, including over 30 members of the Early Act Club of Lanes Mill School in Brick.

A major sponsor of the event was Ocean Medical Center.

The top male runners were Mark Melleo, first place, and Phil Coffin, second place. The top female runners were Lisa Wilhelm, first place, and Kristin Disoteo, second place.
