Chambers Bridge On Tap For Repaving Project
TOMS RIVER - Six Ocean County roads will be repaved, including a congested stretch of Chambers Bridge Road, as part of more than $2 million in contracts to be awarded by the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
"These contracts are part of our annual road maintenance and improvement effort," said Freeholder Director John P. Kelly. "At any given time, the county has $60 million worth of road projects under way to ensure our roads are modern, safe and well maintained."
A $1.9 million contract awarded to Earle Asphalt Company of Farmingdale includes the reconstruction and resurfacing of five roads.
Included are: Chambers Bridge Road from the ShopRite entrance to Brick Blvd. in Brick Township; Bay Ave. (Route 571) from Hooper Ave. to Oak Ave. near the Ocean County Mall in Toms River Township; Route 571 from Leawood Ave. to Route 9 in Toms River Township; Larsen Road between New Prospect Road and the Monmouth County line in Jackson Township; and a portion of Church Street in the Borough of Lakehurst.
Work on at least some of the projects is expected to begin later this fall and be completed by the spring, Kelly said.
A second contract, totaling $233,813 and also awarded to Earle Asphalt, will improve and resurface a section of Oak Ridge Parkway near Whitesville Road in Toms River Township.
The project includes new turning lanes into the rink's parking lot, Freeholder Deputy Director James F. Lacey said.
"The improvements will include a slightly sloped curve to improve safety along the roadway that is also used by many senior citizens traveling between their homes in Berkeley Township and shopping centers in Toms River," Lacey said.
A separate contract will fund the installation of a new traffic signal at Oak Ridge Parkway and Whitesville Road.
The intersection is also the entrance to Winding River Park, a sprawling township facility, with bike trails and numerous sports fields.
The freeholders had also awarded two contracts earlier in the year for various road reconstruction and resurfacing projects in 2007.
North Green Street in Tuckerton has already been completed, while work on Bridge Avenue and River Avenue in Point Pleasant Borough, Ocean Avenue in Seaside Park, Forge Pond Road in Brick, Radio Road in Little Egg Harbor and Railroad Ave. in Eagleswood will get underway in the near future.
