Garden State Philharmonic Announces Final Installment
BRICK - The Garden State Philharmonic's final installment of Exploring American Genius will be held on May 10 at 8 p.m. at the historic Strand Theatre in Lakewood, which features American music inspired by the words of Antonin Dvorak. The program, entitled The Dvorak Effect, will feature Dvorak's masterful Ninth Symphony, "From the New World" and newer compositions like Horatio Parker's "Northern Ballad," Henry Gilbert's "Dance in Place Congo" and George Chadwick's "Elegy."
Dvorak helped to establish the first conservatory in the U.S., and he called for American composers to create their own voice rather than to imitate their European counterparts. He suggested the use of spirituals and Indian melodies as a basis for this sound. Parker, Gilbert and Chadwick are among those who heeded Dvorak's words, creating the Second New England School of American Composers. Their works have a distinct sound and had a great influence on generations of composers.
"Musically Speaking," a special pre-concert presentation featuring Artistic Director and Conductor Anthony LaGruth, will be held before the concert at 7:15 p.m. This is a special introduction and a chance to ask questions about the evening's musical program.
The Dvorak Effect is sponsored in part by funding from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the Florian J. Lombardi Foundation, the Frank and Lydia Bergen Foundation and donations from the community.
