Tourette Syndrome Of New Jersey To Host Family Camp Weekend

SOMERVILLE - The Tourette Syndrome Association of New Jersey is hosting its annual Family Camp Weekend for children with TS. This event, set for June, comes on the heels of a new Associated Press article which examines the rise of summer camps for children with special needs.

"Research suggests that such special camps may offer more than a rite of passage these children otherwise would miss. They might have a lasting therapeutic value," the Associated Press stated.

TSANJ's annual camp weekend for children and families dealing with TS has been a huge success since its inception in 2005. Over 200 children, parents and siblings spend three days focusing on confidence-building, stigma shattering and learning to live to the fullest potential despite this often misunderstood disorder. "Watching children playing with other TS kids, without feeling like their tics make them different, is really an amazing thing," said TSANJ Executive Director Faith Rice. "The value of this experience is priceless. This experience helps these kids to grow, learn and share like nothing else."

This year's camp will be held from June 6 to 8 at YMCA Camp Bernie in Port Murray. "It's three days that will change lives," said Rice. "And what's impressive is when you talk to the kids during the weekend or three months later, they'll tell you how much it means to have this time to bond, grow and share."
