Jersey Shore Partnership Announces Summer Celebration

SANDY HOOK - The Jersey Shore Partnership will be holding their 12th Annual Summer Celebration June 9 starting at 4:30 p.m. with a walking tour of the fort followed by the party starting at 5:30 p.m. The event returns to scenic Sandy Hook and historic Fort Hancock.

Ray and Jay Cosgrove and their family will be honored by the JSP for their contributions to the Jersey Shore for operating Bahrs Seafood Restaurant and Marina, a tradition at the shore for more than 90 years. The father and son will be presented with the Outstanding Partnership Award.

Ray and his son, Jay, have carried on the tradition started by Ray's grandparents and Jay's great grandparents in 1917 when they created what has become a landmark at the Jersey Shore. John Bahrs, the son of a tall ship captain, and his wife, Florence, came to the Highlands from Newark in 1917 to start a new business. That business has grown into one of the best seafood restaurants at the Jersey Shore and has helped create family memories for decades of visitors.

The restaurant started when a nor'easter struck the shore, and John and Florence started serving meals to the stranded fishermen. Meals then were breakfasts of fried eels, fresh eggs and buckwheat pancakes and lunches and dinners of stew meat, fresh caught fishand Jack's famous clam chowder. The family and staff have gone on to serve more than 11 million customers, and the clam chowder is now sold in quality supermarkets.

"The Jersey Shore Partnership is proud to honor the Cosgroves and Bahrs for the tremendous contributions they have made to the Jersey Shore and to the New Jersey economy. Bahrs Landing Restaurant and Marina have become a traditional part of family gatherings at the Jersey Shore and are part of what create the excellent quality of life that we enjoy," said Jack Rosenfeld, Jersey Shore Partnership chairman. The Jersey Shore Partnership is a non-profit,non-partisan organization based in Red Bank that promotes a stable source of funding for shore protection and replenishment along the state's 127-mile coastline.

The summer celebration has come to symbolize the beginning of the summer season at the Jersey Shore. This year, Laurence M. Downes, chairman and CEO of New Jersey Resources, based in Wall Township, will serve as dinner chair. Mr. Downes previously served as chairman of the partnership. State Senator Joseph Kyrillos and his wife, Susan Doctorian Kyrillos, counselor to the president of Monmouth University, will serve as honorary co-chairs for the outdoor dinner event that features chefs from more than 20 of the finest shore restaurants preparing their signature dishes, specialties from New Jersey seafood distributors and Jersey Fresh vegetables and fruits.

Also being honored for their contributions to the shore and New Jersey are Bill, Bob and Pat Healey, owner of Viking Yachts, a thriving Jersey Shore family-owned company celebrating 43 years in the business of building luxury performance yachts, who will be presented with the Tom Gagliano Leadership Award. Mr. Gagliano, a former state senator, is the founder of the Jersey Shore Partnership.

The event will also recognize Gef Flimlin, marine agent for the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Ocean County, for his leadership and outstanding commitment to the growth and revitalization of the seafood industry in New Jersey. He will receive the Seafood Industry Award.

Representatives James Saxton and Frank Pallone have been invited in recognition of their efforts in Congress to support funding for beach restoration projects. They will receive the Elected Leadership Award.

Tickets for the event are $100, and sponsorship packages are available as well as advertising opportunities in the Summer Celebration Dinner Journal. Additional information can be obtained by calling Margot Walsh at 732-212-4145.

The JSP Foundation was created in November 2006 as a 501(c)(3) to advance the educational goals of the partnership. Additional information about the partnership can be found at the partnership's Web site, www. thejerseyshorepartnership.com.
