U.S. Navy League Cadet Program Announces Enrollment

LAKEHURST - The U.S. Navy League Cadet Corps is a program for youth between the ages of 10 and 13. The program is sponsored by the Lakehurst Council of the Navy League of the United States and is supported by the Department of the Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Navy League Cadet Program is open to youth in elementary and middle school. Although less intensive, the Navy League Cadet Program is a similar to and has a lot of the same benefits as the Sea Cadet Program. Everyone learns military drill, discipline, conduct, teamwork, naval history, personal hygiene and more. A special curriculum for the league cadets (ages 10 to 13) allows them to learn about the Navy and Coast Guard like the older sea cadets. League cadets are encouraged to earn scholastic achievement awards by turning in a copy of their report card. Ribbons are also awarded in physical fitness to those who qualify.

To enroll in the Navy League Cadet Program, youth must be between 10 and 13 years of age, be enrolled in school, be a U.S. citizen, have parental approval and be physically qualified, and most importantly, you must be motivated to be part of the program. A summer training program is currently available for $75 a week for Navy League cadets.

Cadets enrolling in the program drill one weekend a month and eat and live on the base. Frequently, active duty personnel teach classes or give tours to the cadets. The Lakehurst Naval Base strongly supports the program and provides drilling spaces and berthing for the cadets. Mayor Fressola of Manchester Township issues a proclamation every September making September Sea Cadet Month in the township.

To learn more about the opportunities for your sons or daughters, you may e-mail Squadron1@ aol.com, or call the Sea Cadet Officeat 732-323-7823 (answering machine). PTA's teachers, guidance counselors and school officials are encouraged to contact LCDR Richard Ashbey, NSCC or LTJG Ralph Moranz, NSCC at the above e-mail address.
